OPEN SOURCE FOR WINDOWS ADMINISTRATORS

CHRISTIAN GROSS - Personal Name;

This book is about using Open Source on a Microsoft® Windows® operating system. Whether you’re an administrator managing a computer network or a power user running a small home/office network, this book is for you. The material presented is entirely based on Open Source software and how it can be used to solve specific problems on the Windows platform. For many people, Open Source is associated with the Linux and FreeBSD™ operating systems. However, the Windows operating system is not excluded from using Open Source software. In fact, a very large part of Open Source applications work on multiple operating systems, in- cluding Windows. The purpose of this book is not to overhaul your “operational routine,” nor convert you to the world of Open Source software because that would be misleading about the strengths and benefits of Open Source. This book is about providing a set of tools that can be used to complement your current operational routine. Open Source sometimes becomes necessary for two notable reasons: budget restrictions and the need for an individual solution that solves the immediate problem as opposed to an all-encompassing transformation. As for the first reason, closed source software is most often packaged with a price tag and budgets may not have room for additional spending. Money is commonly a limitation. Open Source is free software, accessible to anyone. The second reason refers to the situations when a problem arises that does not require an application overhaul, yet the closed source application doesn’t have the capability to adequately manage the problem. Alternatively, a proposed solution might require changes in the operation of currently running applications.
