The Developer’s Guide to Social Programming

Mark D. Hawker - Personal Name;

The beauty and success of Twitter lies in its simplicity.It’s simple not just for its users but also within its rich application programming interface (API),which provides you the tools required to interact with Twitter’s internal services.The Twitter API is responsible for more than 90% of Twitter server traffic and provides the gateway to much of Twitter’s core functionality,such as status updates,direct messaging,and searches.As the Twitter platform evolves,more features will be added to the Twitter API,so this book will serve as a complement to the expanding online Twitter documentation.Recent enhancements include the Geolocation API,Lists API,and the Retweet API (each of which is covered in Chapter 4,“Extending the Twitter API:Retweets,Lists,and Location”). This chapter explains a number of building blocks,such as methods,authentication, return formats,and status codes that will enable you to start interacting with the service. Interaction with the Twitter API is described using a command-line interface (cURL), and in this chapter,you are introduced to a PHP client library developed by Jaisen Mathai called twitter-async,which supports basic authentication as well as Twitter OAuth,which is covered in Chapter 3,“Authentication with Twitter OAuth.”At the end of this chapter, you will have gained an understanding of the Twitter API and developed the necessary skills to start interacting with the service.From here,Chapter 2,“Exploring the Twitter API and Search API,”will guide you through Twitter API return objects to give you an in-depth understanding of how to interpret responses to suit all of your applications.
