Media and Internet Management

Gabler Verlag - Personal Name;

On the whole, it can be noted that during the infancy of media management & media
economics, only very few articles appeared (especially in peer reviewed journals).
Even though seven essential branches of research developed during the period between
the 1950s and 1980s, the absolute number of publications was rather small. Up
until that time, the media did not yet constitute a relevant research field. The interest
in economic research developed, however, in tandem with the increasing economic
power of the media.
Particularly in the 1980s, the media markets experienced dynamic growth. This development
was fueled, in part, by the novel developments in information and communication
technology. In most cases, the academic discussions primarily concerned individual
subareas of the media sector, especially the printing industry. The concentration,
competition, market entry barriers and demand behavior within this branch were
studied during the 1980s.
In the course of the privatization of the electronic media, however, all the subareas of
the media sector received increased emphasis from research and education. In 1988,
Robert G. Picard published the “Journal of Media Economics (JME)” for the first time.
It accommodated the increased research interest in media economics. Ever since that
time, not only could a constant increase in the number of publications be observed, but
the significance of the subject also grew in educational circles
